UNDERSTAND YOUR HEARING

Are conversations taking a little more effort?

Hearing changes can be easy to overlook. You might notice yourself:

  • Asking people to repeat themselves more often.
  • Finding conversations harder to follow when there is background noise.
  • Turning the television up louder than before.

These experiences can be associated with hearing difficulties, but they do not establish a diagnosis. An assessment can help you understand your hearing and discuss suitable next steps.

You don’t need to know which appointment to choose before asking a question.

03 / WHAT TO EXPECT

Let’s take this one step at a time.

It’s understandable to feel unsure about a first visit. You can start by asking about the cost, how long to allow and what the assessment involves.

01

Share what you’re unsure about

Ask for Zelna at the branch. Whether you’re asking for yourself or someone you love, you don’t need to have all the answers.

02

Ask about your visit

Ask which appointment is suitable, what it costs, how long it takes and whether you need to prepare or bring anything.

03

Choose your next step

You can call the branch or use the online request route when you feel ready. Confirm the appointment type and time with the practice before travelling.

04 / GOOD TO KNOW

Questions before booking?

Questions about your child, the cost or hearing aids are welcome. You can ask before deciding on an appointment.

Email a practical question
I’m concerned about my child’s hearing. Where do I start?

It’s understandable to want a clear next step for your child. Call the branch and ask for Zelna before booking. Tell her your child’s age and ask whether the practice offers a suitable assessment. The over-12 age rule below applies to free screening; it does not tell you whether a younger child can have a diagnostic assessment here. If booking online, ask whose details to enter.

What happens at an assessment, and how long will it take?

Knowing what to expect can make a first visit feel easier. Ask Zelna to explain what your appointment involves, how long to allow and whether to bring anything or prepare beforehand. Confirm the type of assessment and fee before your visit.

I feel unsure about hearing aids. Can I start with a question?

Of course. You can explain what worries you and ask how assessment results and possible next steps are discussed. You don’t need to choose a device to ask a question. Call and ask for Zelna to talk about where to begin.

Can I ask about my hearing even if I’m managing day to day?

Yes. You can ask about a change in your hearing even if you are still managing everyday conversations. An assessment can help you understand your hearing and discuss possible next steps. If you are unsure where to begin, call Zelna with a question.

Is a free screening the same as a hearing test?

No. A screening is a brief check that may indicate whether further assessment is needed. A diagnostic hearing test is a more detailed assessment. Free screenings are available for people over 12. Ask about eligibility and diagnostic-test fees before booking.

What if I am unsure which appointment to choose?

Call Zelna on 013 692 4347 at Spec-Savers Highveld Mall Audiology and ask to speak with her about choosing between a screening and a hearing test.

Can I ask about fees or medical aid first?

Yes. It’s reasonable to want to know the cost before making plans. Ask Zelna about the fee for your appointment, payment arrangements and how your medical-aid benefits may apply. The free screening offer does not mean every hearing test is free.
